Thesis about fans of The Matrix

Postby Demgirl » July 3rd, 2010, 12:48 am

Hi all :)

My name is Emma and I am currently a PhD student at Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, Australia. I am interested in The Matrix Universe and particularly in how fans engage with The Matrix transmedially. I am a huge fan of The Matrix Universe; in fact, my fascination with The Matrix and cross-media narratives is what inspired me to write my thesis in the first place.

In terms of my research I would like to investigate how fans of The Matrix engage with the text transmedially. When I say “transmedia texts”, I mean stories which are told across multiple media (such as television, games, and comics). The best example of this is actually is The Matrix; a text where the story is spread across multiple kinds of media including films, comics, and games. A transmedia story should be consistent across different kinds of media as well. In other words, the story should flow; so what you see happen in the films should make sense in terms of the storyline in relation to what happens in the comics. Transmedia storytelling is a fairly recent development in media distribution and in this study I am interested in finding out what factors influence the way fans engage with transmedia texts and how they engage with them.

If you are at all interested in being a part of this research I would love to hear from you. Simply send me a pm or respond to this post and I will contact you with further details. I hope to hear from some of you soon!

Sure, I'm down for helping. But I'm afraid you are a few years too late :(. All of the Matrix transmedia is gone. The Matrix Online shut down, whatisthematrix.com shut down, there haven't been any new Animatrix or Matrix comics in a long time. So, while during the heyday a lot of us here took part in everything Matrix - hell I even drank that nasty Powerade Matrix flavor haha - all of our stories of interacting with the transmedia story would be from 7 to 3 years ago.

Hey FoXDie!

Thanks for the offer to help. Yeah, I totally understand where you're coming from; that being said, even if all you can offer are reflections on how you engaged with the text when it was all happening, that will still be tremendously helpful. I'm still in the process of "collecting" participants, so to speak, but once I've got enough I'll send you a pm with the details of the study and we can get started.

Thanks again, and you'll hear from me soon! :D

I still put on the films on bluray and defend them in any discussion. Hell I even wrote a paper about an ethics dilemma whil I was in college (got an A, BAM!). Most of us probably have it like that and it may be what keeps us here; a shared past and an interest that used to consume a great part of our free time.
